Summer can be a convenient time to make a move. School is out, and bosses understand that employees are going to take some time off for a variety of reasons. Moving in the summer also has its challenges, though, especially in the South. The heat and humidity make an unpleasant and sometimes dangerous pair. Keep these tips in mind if you are planning on moving this summer.
Stay Cool and Hydrated
Water is your best friend in toasty situations like this. Always have some water ready, and keep drinking even when you think you’ve had enough. Once you feel thirsty, you are already a little dehydrated, so it is very important to stay ahead of it.
If water isn’t doing it for you, add some flavor or drink a Gatorade instead. Fruits and vegetables are another healthy way of staying hydrated. Make sure to get out of the sun every now and then, and jump in the AC to cool down when possible.
Protect Your Sensitive Items
Electronics do not need to be in the heat for long. Pack these in separate boxes and have them clearly labeled and easy to access. If they fit, put them in the car with you instead of on the moving truck so you can bring them in as soon as you get to your new home. The same goes for candles and aerosols.
Make sure that your utilities are set up before you get to your new home. The move will be a lot easier and safer with water flowing and air conditioning blowing. You should also make a separate box for items you may need upon arrival at your new place, like a pitcher for water, towels to shower, and a hand-held fan if you have one. Put this box in the same area that you have your electronics box so it will be easy to find.
